11 For I am longing to see you so
that I may share with you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— 12 or rather so that we may be mutually encouraged by each
other’s faith, both yours and mine. Romans 1:11-12
In our faith lives, we learn
to practice various activities that are faith specific. We pray, we sing hymns,
at some times of the year we may do a form of fasting. These practices are a part of our worship and
part of our journey of discipleship.
Spiritual practices such as these cultivate our spiritual
development.
A good way to think of
spiritual practices is that of walking a path.
Using spiritual practice, we move toward a goal, whether it is
enlightenment, discerning God’s will, or to more deeply experience our
spiritual selves.
Beginning in September, we
will begin a Spiritual Practices Workshop. Each third Thursday of the month,
the first being September 15, anyone interested is invited to come together as
we explore different spiritual practices. The first will be Sacred Reading. I have set up a blog site, http://labyrinthliving.blogspot.com,
so that each practice may be broadly explained before we meet. At the third Thursday meetings, we will
discuss the practice further and will explore the practice together.
During the intervening time,
participants will be invited to comment on their experiences, successes and
difficulties encountered in the exploration of the practice.
Each month we will introduce something
new to explore. It may be that some
practices will interest you much more than others. So, the group will be fluid, changing number
and participants as we explore our journey of Discipleship in new ways.
Watch the bulletin inserts and
the BlogSpot for more information.
Peace
